The letters in the collection are carbon copies of the originals. include various writings describing the history of the organization; issues of the group's newsletter, Hoof Beats; minutes of board meetings; membership records; financial records; an insurance policy with Allied Mutual Insurance Company (1972); bylaws of the Town and Country Saddle Horse Association; materials related to the organization's performances (programs, newspaper clippings, photographs, advertising, etc); materials related to reunions; records of trips; correspondence; and newspaper clippings. Records in this collection date from 1949 until 1977. by John M. Henry include a 418 p. typescript autobiography, "A Happy Editor : the autobiography of John M. Henry," and "The John M. Henry Two-Township Collection", a series of sketches and stories by Henry.

John Henry was Senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper's Des Moines based secretary during his last term in the Senate (1962-1968). He also served as drillmaster for the Flying Hoofs of Iowa from 1947 until 1968. Flying Hoofs of Iowa was an amateur mounted drill-team organization formed in 1945 by the Town and Country Saddle Club of Des Moines. The organization continued until 1977.
